Simple Math

Posted in Love, Now Listen, Tunes on March 2, 2011 by readmoremusic

No Internet and 3G laziness means you don’t get a link, but go find Manchester Orchestra’s new single “Simple Math” and tell me you aren’t changed. I can’t really say anything more than that.

The album comes out May 10, best day-before-birthday-present ever!

Soul Meets Body

I’m not sure if I’m happy or sad that I relate so well to this song.  I also can’t really decide if this is a song of love or loss.  In any case, it does contain one of my favourite Death Cab for Cutie lyrics, and that is saying a lot since DCFC consistently produces some of my most treasured lines.

“I do believe it’s true, that there are roads left in both of our shoes”.  Perfect.

Every time I think.. no.. Radiohead CAN’T do it again… they do.  New album “The King of Limbs” is out now, after an announcement earlier this week.  You have to pay what they want this time, but judging from the video/song below, the music is set to be fantastic and well worth the investment.

I meet some people through my chosen profession, but probably my favourite rock star encounter was when I met Thom Yorke.  I was at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, minding my own business, when in strolled a bored-looking Thom Yorke.  I was in disbelief until I remembered that he was playing in Oakland the next day, before moving on to Coachella.  I said hi, we had a pleasant exchange of words, and we both went on with our day.  No fangirl freakout, no pictures, no autographs.  Just, a moment.

Go to the Radiohead website to order the album and watch the video on a great, huge video player.

Watson, A.I. and the Future

Posted in Love, Science Fiction, Videos on February 16, 2011 by readmoremusic

I am LOVING Watson.  Finally my super-nerdy obsession interest in Science Fiction is hitting the mainstream.  The PBS news report below gives a comprehensive, yet concise, explanation of Watson, the IBM SuperComputer that is kicking human ass at Jeopardy!, so I will save my words for opinion and posturing.

As an avid fan of Science Fiction, perhaps I should be more frightened than most about this advance in artificial intelligence, but I am actually really excited.  I’ve devoured books on the subject, hoping that in my lifetime I’d see self-driving cars and androids who think they’re human.  After all, the question of “What is Human?” is one of my favourite dilemmas explored in classic and modern science fiction.  What defines humanity?  If you look, act, and think like a human, are you?  How do you know if you are a human or a machine, anyway?  Memories of a childhood?  What about implanted memories a la “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep”/”Blade Runner”?  If something as micro as the media can be used to control the population, who’s to think that this control doesn’t exist on a super-awesome-macro level?  Is The Matrix that hard to believe?  So many questions.

I don’t actually believe I will live to see a world with technology as advanced as in my favourite books and movies, but any time Sci Fi bleeds into reality, I am pumped!

The answer is 42.

Chuck Ragan and the Meaning of Life

Posted in Live Music, Love on February 11, 2011 by readmoremusic

The night began with my pals Stu and Bill playing acoustic Lowtalker songs and covers, followed by the super talented Dan (Carpenter) premiering his new project, Indian Affairs. My friends never cease to impress me. It’s going to be hard to leave nights like these.

Closing the night was Chuck Ragan, who played a long set of fantastic songs, performed by a simple yet surprisingly full three-piece. The 2nd last song was a cover of “Bleeder”, to which I shouted along to with some of my closest friends. Perfect night.

New Cold War Kids and Dan Winnick Love

Posted in Love, Tunes on October 23, 2010 by readmoremusic

Their third LP “Mine is Yours” is due out in January. They gave Rolling Stone a sneak peek at the new single and some video footage of the recording.

The video won’t embed, so check it out HERE.

When I first met Dan Winnick I literally thought he was the guitar player for Cold War Kids. I mean, in my head, I realized that it made no sense for the guitar player of Cold War Kids to be hanging out in Vancouver, and even less sense for him to be cruising around with my good friends. But come on! The resemblance is uncanny. I tagged the guitar player (2nd from the left) in the photo below as Dan on Facebook, and a bunch of our friends actually thought it was him, so I’m not the only one!

Dan, despite my obsession with how much he looked like a member of a band he had never heard of, was super friendly and a barrel of laughs. I instantly felt like I’d known him for years. As so many have said before me, that was Dan’s way. He was GOOD and caring and kind to everyone he met. From that day forward, every time I see or hear Cold War Kids, I think of Dan. I hope you didn’t mind too much, friend.
