MT-40

I’ve been trying to broaden my horizons lately, so here’s a post about a band playing music that isn’t guitar-driven rock ‘n roll.  I know, hard to believe!

I had no idea who this band was when I showed up for the Hot Sex & High Finance show in the scuzzy part of town.  They were awesome!  Recordings aren’t the best, but live they’re great.  3-piece.  Sort of like if Joy Division had a MacBook and weird instruments made from old typewriters.  And, well, without that whole crippling depression thing.

Chuck Ragan and the Meaning of Life

Posted in Live Music, Love on February 11, 2011 by readmoremusic

The night began with my pals Stu and Bill playing acoustic Lowtalker songs and covers, followed by the super talented Dan (Carpenter) premiering his new project, Indian Affairs. My friends never cease to impress me. It’s going to be hard to leave nights like these.

Closing the night was Chuck Ragan, who played a long set of fantastic songs, performed by a simple yet surprisingly full three-piece. The 2nd last song was a cover of “Bleeder”, to which I shouted along to with some of my closest friends. Perfect night.

Gorillaz…

… was awesome! My favourite parts were the Demon Strings section of 7 babes dressed like sailors playing violin and cello, two drummers, the perfectly-synced video and live performance, Mick Jones, Damon Albarn, De La Soul, and of course, Paul Simonon playing this bass line!

I can’t embed but watch the video for Feel Good Inc. HERE.

Tonight: Northcote/Run River/David Vertesi

@ Media Club

Tonight is a night of great bands and great people.

Northcote is headlining, which is the fantastic new(ish) project of Matt Goud, formerly of Means and the Emerson Letters.

Check out his cover of Hot Water Music’s “Trusty Chords” below. Believe me, while I always hope to hear one of his amazing covers of punk rock classics like HWM or Face to Face, the originals are where the show really is.

Run River is a great rock band that are easy to love. Guitar player Tyler Schwindt is the genius behind Library.

David Vertesi plays in a few fun bands, including Hey Ocean! and Topless Gaylove Tekno Party, as well as supporting several touring Canadian artists. His solo stuff is a great indie/folk mix with bluesy vocals.

Come hang out, it’ll be fun!

Superchunk Tonight!

Not only is Superchunk an amazing and seminal indie rock band (and fits in nicely with my current 90s obsession), members Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance also started a little record label you might have heard of called Merge Records that would go on to release some of the best indie rock records of the 90s and into the next millennium.

Excited to finally see them play tonight at the Biltmore.
